Abstract

The internet and e-mail services provide numerous opportunities for an organization to communicate effectively and enhance its service and productivity. This online communication is continuously gaining momentum in various sectors. One of the sectors that has been greatly affected by the technology is the industrial sector. A research was conducted to gather information on the functions of e-mail among engineers in the industries for communication purposes as well as the types of communication involved in the process and the effectiveness of email communication. The instrument used is a set of questionnaire, distributed among engineers in the industries to elicit data on the functions, types and effectiveness of e-mails inclusive of demographic components. This study proposes that e-mail communication is a vital aspect of the engineers' nature of work in the industries. It is a boon for the communication process within and outside the organization as one hundred per cent of the respondents acknowledged that using e-mail improves their work performance. Primarily, all the variables studied showed a positive and significant results in the application of e-mail among the engineers in the industries.
