Abstract

One of the most challenging task facing engineering curriculum developers is the problem of providing a balanced engineering education that integrates technical and non-technical skills. The quality of future engineers depends very much on the quality of engineering education, which is in turn dependent upon the needs of the industries. Having this in mind, the researchers present the first part of a two-part study, which aims to investigate and describe the skills that industrial trainees need in order to perform according to the expectations of the industries. To meet this purpose, a survey was administered on Electrical and Electronic Engineers in Malaysia to elicit responses on essential skills to be inherent in an industrial trainee. The results of the survey reveal a list of important competencies that are most sought after by employers in the area of technical knowledge, business, personal and communication skills, as well as knowledge of national history and culture. The discussion of the results will follow with an examination of the implications. It is hoped that the results of the study will aid in the review of the engineering curriculum to better cater to the needs of a developing nation.
