Abstract

This research explores on the nature of spoken English produced by engineers working in Malaysian industry. The theory that underpins this project is socio-linguistic theory. Data is collected in two stages, firstly via self administered questionnaires completed by 126 Malaysian engineers from 23 companies m three states. namely, Malacca, Johor and Negeri Sembilan. Secondly, a follow-up structured interview session with the senior administrative staff of the companies was conducted to elicit more information. As a preliminary step, a pilot test was carried out in industries in Malacca. The questionnaire comprises of three parts - demographic characteristics, nature of spoken English and training. The findings show that the usage of English language by Malaysian engineers is very significant in the workplace, especially in the field of oral presentation, report writing and meeting. The findings above give us insights on the nature of spoken English among engineers in Malaysian industry. This finding is used to cater for the needs of future engineers and researchers to design a communication module in order to produce competent young engineers, particularly at Kolej Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia.
