Abstract

Face detection and recognition is a fascinating topic in the field of computer vision. It has gained increasing interests over the years, especially for biometrics identification and authentification applications in the homeland security. There are already many face detection and recognition algorithms that exist today, each has its merits and weakness. This research is focusing on developing a distributed embedded system that can automatically identify persons approaching a camera. This project is hardware and software based and utilizes the modern face detection and recognition technologies. This project presents the development of an automatic face detection system using National Instruments LabVIEW 8.5 graphical development environment and NI Vision Builder for the image processing. For the face recognition, a Vector Quantization Histogram technique will be applied with LabVIEW 8.5 programming language. This project: focuses on face recognition of still images, using face images from the well-known ORL Face Database. The system requires minimal hardware (one USB camera and any standard computer) and the focus of this project would be on the Lab VIEW programming to detect faces in captured video frames. The application acts as a 'smart' person recognizer for home applications without human intervention.
