Abstract

This study explores lecturers' and students' perceptions of the usefulness and their patterns of use of e-learning to supplement face to- face instruction in Technical Communication subjects offered to students at University Technical Malaysia, Melaka (UTeM). Using My Tech Comm Lab as e-learning platform, its efficacy in delivering the subjects was explored. Drawn from quantitative and qualitative data, the findings revealed that although both lectures and students have positive attitudes towards the potentials of web-based technology in enhancing learning, My Tech Comm Lab (web-based technology) was underutilized by lecturers as well as students. Among the inherent features of My Tech Comm Lab, grammar resources were most frequently used followed by writing process resources and research procedures resources. Several factors have been identified on reasons for the restrictive usage of My Tech Comm Lab. Among the reasons identified were lacks of time and accessibility problems. It is concluded that alignment between the use of technology, the syllabus and assessment, and the lecturers' pedagogical belief and teaching and learning approaches need to be considered to encourage the widespread integration of technology in education.
